X Factor USA 2011: Simon Cowell blown away by Stacy Francis and Chris Rene performances

The pressure was on Simon Cowell to deliver a knock-out first show with the launch of X Factor USA tonight - and he didn't disappoint.
The 51-year-old, who quit his coveted role on American Idol to bring his British format to America, wowed viewers with a series of both weird and wonderful performances, and a dose of controversy.
A single mother who had everyone in tears, a reformed drug addict hoping to turn his life around, the most bizarre but endearing older couple, and a man who pulled his pants down mid-act, were just a few of the highlights of a stunning first show.

X Factor USA 2011: Cheryl Cole cut after blink-and-you'll-miss-it appearance in launch

She had big dreams of conquering America and even bigger hair, but tonight Cheryl Cole fell decidedly flat after making a blink-and-you-miss it appearance on X Factor USA.
The 28-year-old was unceremoniously dumped midway through the launch show, which aired on the Fox network tonight after months of hype.
She was introduced as one of Britain's most successful pop stars in the opener, but later vanished without any proper explanation to viewers.

X Factor USA 2011: Judges Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell rekindle flirtation on new panel

After months of speculation, big money negotiations and one controversial change-up, there was one big question on everyone's lips tonight - do Simon Cowell and his cohorts have the X Factor?
While there was plenty of colorful contestants on the stage, there was also a fair share of entertainment on the judging panel too, as the American version of the hit British show launched in the U.S.
The body language and looks of agreeance, disappointment and disgust were all still there, as were the bickering, rivalry and of course, the flirtation between the judges.

The most notable being the rekindled chemistry between Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul, which made them famous on American Idol.
Right off the bat in the opening montage, Paula said she was looking forward to be reunited with her old pal.
'I am looking forward to sitting next to my partner in crime. He is a handful but so am I!' she exclaimed.

Botox fan Simon Cowell's facial expressions seem limited on TV appearance

He is famous for keeping a stiff upper lip when confronted with weeping wannabes on his talent shows.
But it looks as though Simon Cowell no longer has much choice in the matter.
The 51-year-old, who once described Botox as ‘no more unusual than toothpaste’, appears to have gone a little too far in his efforts to keep wrinkles at bay.

X Factor USA host Steve Jones branded 'utterly irrelevant' by critics | Mail Online

X Factor USA host Steve Jones let off steam today with a fast-paced run through the streets of Los Angeles.
The Welsh import was spotted working up a sweat near his new luxury bachelor pad dressed in a ripped T-shirt and shorts.
He had a furrowed brow too - and it's little wonder.
The 34-year-old, who has taken on American Idol star Ryan Seacrest's hosting role, hasn't received many plaudits in early reviews of the show, which launches in the U.S. tonight.

X Factor USA: 'I have no regrets about axing Cheryl Cole'

U.S. television critics widely preferred axed X Factor USA judge Cheryl Cole over her replacement Nicole Sherzinger.
But Fox chief Mike Darnell, who is known as ‘the Rumpelstiltskin of reality TV,' is satisfied he made the correct call in having her axed.
He ordered Simon Cowell to fire her after being underwhelmed by her performances, much to the embarrassment of the music mogul.
However the Newcastle star received surprisingly good reviewers, with many saying she performed better than the Pussycat Doll on last night's show.
Having the last laugh: No doubt Cheryl is smiling after reading her reviews despite Fox chief Mike Darnell saying he made the right call

Most bitingly, Neil Glenzinger of the New York Times referred to the former Pussycat Doll as a 'downgrade.'
He added: 'Ms. Scherzinger was a pretty face but, judicially speaking, not much more than a seat warmer.'
No regrets: Mike Darnell said he is very happy with the launch and stands by his decision to axe Cheryl Cole

However Fox executive Mike Darnell was unmoved by the critics, and in a diplomatic statement stood by his decision.
He said: 'It’s easy to love the one that’s gone, but Nicole is great too. Both are stunning but also very different.
'No regrets, but I also love Cheryl.'
Mr Darnell was shocked when he saw audition tapes of her in Los Angeles after being tied up for a fortnight with meetings, and immediately told Simon the axe had to fall.
He reportedly had a crisis of confidence after receiving the call, at the time telling a friend in LA: ‘I’ve got major problems.’
When the woman, a senior music industry figure, asked what was wrong, Cowell replied: ‘It’s Cheryl. They’ve told me to get rid of her.’
The friend said: ‘I’ve never heard him sound so upset. He was embarrassed and sounded defeated.
'He said he was convinced Cheryl would be great in America but that he now realised he had got it badly wrong.'
The judging situation will probably be the last thing on the mind of the 5'2 executive, who is known for his eccentric dress sense of ripped jeans, snakeskin boots and cowboy hats .
Of more importance to the television doyen is the show's below-par performance in the ratings.
It finished second in the ratings with 12.5 million viewers, but Modern Family won the day with 14.3m.
However the show's real competition is American Idol, which had more than double the audience during its premiere show this year with 26m.
In the run-up to its debut boss Simon Cowell had said his goal was beating Idol in the ratings and averaging 20m across its run, a target he seems far from achieving.
But alternative entertainment president Mr Darnell dismissed that as, 'Simon’s showmanship, something you’ve got to love him for.'
The jury is still out: Simon Cowell and his chums will be judged on their success at the end of the season

He added: 'We lived with the reality that there is an enormous interest in every show during premiere week, and honestly, we’re just relieved this morning. Other than crazy expectations, this is a very good premiere.
'We’re happy with the numbers.
'The expectations were ridiculous, and internally this is our best numbers for a Wednesday during premiere week in 13 years.
'If we can keep anywhere close to these numbers for 40 hours in the fall, it would be amazing for us.'

X Factor USA ratings: Launch gets 12m viewers (but couldn't top American Idol) | Mail Online

More than 12 million viewers tuned in to watch the debut of X Factor USA last night.
It is considered a solid number for a new show and premiered at a 4.4/12 among adults 18-49, up 52 per cent from Fox's performance on the night last season.
But Simon Cowell had, of course, been hoping to outdo American Idol.
However, it couldn't stack up to the well-establish talent show, which the 51-year-old walked away from last year to launch X Factor.
